After a week of rain and miserable cold weather (we even started the central heating in the office besides that I already had to put on socks and wrap myself in a shawl) the sun is back in town! Love it, love it, love it!
What more is there to say except that I am going on vacation as well. I am leaving for Greece on Sunday and won’t be back for 10 days. Life cannot get any better than that short of leaving for a year…
But now is not the right time and place to complain about lack of holidays when I am on the cusp of leaving for one. And since we are going to an island which is well-known for its parties, I will leave you with this pearl of wisdom!
Yours, Pollybert

PS: this is actually quite tragic since I am still stupid but not young anymore.

Football Fever

No matter where on this planet you live, I am sure you are aware that it’s football/soccer season in Brazil. The biggest and most important tournament in this sport is happening now. And what is happening in my home? My tv-box from my provider crashed last night and I can’t watch anything on my tv. So what’s a girl to do?

Call first, complain later. That’s what I did. Urgh, they are not coming today and I am leaving for Italy tonight. Next possible appointment for me is July 1st. It doesn’t really matter so much because I won’t be home most of the time, but… and here it comes… I will be spending two evenings at home without tv. What a hardship! Can’t tell you how grateful I am for online streaming. Not the same but better than nothing.

Up until now I have tried to watch every game or at least part of it when I was unable to see all. Ok, the one game that was shown in Europe at 3am I didn’t watch. Couldn’t be bothered to get up. So sorry Ivory Coast and Japan, but you were just not important enough to get up in the middle of the night. I will try to do better for your second game.

I love the excitement surrounding the game, the good vibes in all the public viewing places. People are in a good mood, no matter who wins or loses. Excellent start for a great summer!

In other matters, I am leaving for Italy tonight. Yeah, vacation, vacation, vacation!!! It’s summer and it’s the season to go away. Tuscany is calling, beckoning with dreamy villages, excellent food and a bit of shopping. Can’t wait to have my first cappuccino along the way. I don’t understand why the coffee across the non-existing border tastes so much better, but it does. Actually quite a lot of stuff tastes a lot better across the border.

A couple of lazy days ahead of me, what more can I want? Quite a lot more lazy days right after this trip. But more on that later!

A week of fun and play

When I look out of the window and see the glorious sunshine the rain at the beginning of last week seems far away. I had a great week which passed quickly and when I think about going on vacation next Saturday it almost seems to good to be true. Time is flying at the moment. Why? I have no clue, I just enjoy it.

Monday I met K at Figar again. This time for an after-work drink (for me that meant cherry coke and juice). I still like the place, I am just not happy that it allows smoking. It’s not so bad while there but once you leave everything reeks of stale smoke.002003

Tuesday is still HIIT day. Just because I don’t mention about it, doesn’t mean I am not going there. Twice a week, every Sunday and Tuesday, I attend, sweat and get a bit fitter. My progress is remarkable because I can actually notice that I am getting better at doing stuff. Just tell that to my jeans though!

During the day and also all Wednesday I attended a first aid seminar. Hopefully I will never need it, but at least now I am prepared (as far as one can be prepared for an emergency situation). Here you see me with a pressure dressing and bunny ears.

Wednesday I had dinner with co-workers at the Gaumenspiel. The restaurant has been around for quite a while now and I remember being there years ago. The first time I was super impressed by their panna cotta, second time I was super disappointed because they had no more panna cotta on their menu. So third time is a charm and I hoped for the best.

Doesn’t it look amazing? And maybe that was my problem because it tasted good but not great. And the presentation made me hope for so much more. In the end I found the dessert to be the best course of the meal and as usual when something is so good I have no picture of it. My pistachio nougat layer “wonder” was gone in a flash.

Thursday I had a date with my great-uncle to see a concert at the Musikverein which he then had to cancel last minute. My younger brother was the perfect substitue though and we ended up having a great night out. We were expecting to see a concert with the well known conductor Franz Welser-Möst (well known because even I heard about him) but ended up seeing Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Now I am not a music critique and have actually no idea if something is well played or not. But I can say if I like the music, if it moves me or not. And this concert did, they played something from Gustav Mahler and it had such an uplifting effect. Also the conductor was putting all his emotions into his work, he almost seemed to dance in front of the orchester. Just loved it (plus it was short, by 9:15 we were out of there).

This week I had more work and less fun but it doesn’t matter because tonight I am leaving on vacation to Turkey! Will talk to you there. Yours, Pollybert

Under pressure

I got an email today from a nosy friend requesting another post. Although I tried to explain here that sometimes there is not a lot happening which would be worth a post. But sure, let me tell you what’s going on in my life right now.

In the last couple of weeks I have made it through all the “Best Picture Nominations” for the Academy Awards. This alone shows you that I have been extremely busy. After seeing all of them, do I agree with the Academy? I am not sure; “12 years a slave” is by far not the most entertaining picture. But looking in back in 20 years it will still be a picture worth the award. And this is more than I can say about the others. What I enjoyed the most was “August: Osage County” and interestingly enough “Nebraska”. Who would have thought that I liked the black and white picture best? But the story behind is so realistic, just loved it! And Meryl Streep in Osage County is such a bitch, it’s worth your time!

Furthermore I read the book for the book club among others although I will not attend the club this time. I instead am going on vacation. Yes, you read correctly, I will be going on vacation again (finally!). I will go in April for a week and I will take another week in June. So there you go, something to look forward to for all of us. For me because I will be travelling and for you because there will be a lot of new content.

Since the weather is so fine in Vienna and the cat’s out of the house at the moment, I enjoyed two lovely lunches at the Naschmarkt this week. 016 018
The food was just too good to take any pictures but my preferred place for lunch is the Orient Occident at the moment. Service is slow once the garden is open (which triples the seating but number of staff stays the same) which doesn’t matter since the food is amazing and the sun is shining!

More update coming soon and until then I don’t want to hear any complaints!
Yours, Pollybert

PS: Oh yes, and for the other one of my friends who doesn’t want to read about my running progress: I am still running, I try to every week but at least once every two weeks. We signed up for the Austrian Women’s Run on May 25th. I am not sure if at the moment I can even run the time I had at the New Year’s Run however there are still a couple of weeks to go. Also spring is here, so no more excuses and we are fully committed to running our personal best!

PPS: Remember “Under pressure” from Queen? Here a version with David Bowie! Freddie Mercury is still one of the best!!

Goodbye Spain, Hello Vienna

Our vacation was definitely over. The night before we had already started packing and just one more breakfast was waiting for us before going to Malaga to catch our flight back. The weather was gorgeous, the sun was out in full waving goodbye.

20130915-222533.jpgBy the way the old lady behind me was drinking Cava all day long always starting with a glass at breakfast. Maybe that’s the secret of growing old?

Then we only had to get our luggage from the room with another stop at the guest library (just couldn’t resist) and off we went to Malaga. Everything went smooth, we even arrived ahead of time and I was home by 6:20pm. On the flight I finished the second book of ‘The Hitchhiker’s’ series ‘The restaurant at the end of the universe’ by Douglas Adams. I have to start to appreciate the humor of the books. Had a couple of laugh out loud moments.

When I arrived home, I just unpacked and went for a run. Obviously I am motivated. Have another sporty deadline looming ahead of me plus an increased waistline after the vacation.

This was it with vacation for the year 2013, I have nothing else planned so far. Now I have to take my time to think about where I can go in the future. Will keep you posted. Yours, Pollybert

PS: Saw this picture and it says it all.
